Effective March 1, 2013, the Division of Personnel Standards and Education is requiring that an Illinois firefighter must be the minimum age of 18 to participate with the OSFM Certification program. Participation includes, but is not limited to, challenging an OSFM written or practical examination, and the submission of OSFM course completion.
Any person under the age of 18 will not receive an OSFM certification.
All Illinois fire department personnel rosters must be updated to include the date of birth of all active members serving on the fire department.
The OSFM will not permit the scheduling of an applicant who has not provided their date of birth. To update the fire department roster, please utilize the PSE on-line Web Access system.
All Illinois firefighters who are currently under the age of 18 and who have previously participated in the OSFM certification program, but who are not yet certified, will be unable to continue their participation in the OSFM certification program until the age requirement is met. Their records will remain on file, and upon reaching the age of 18, those applicants will become eligible to participate in the OSFM certification program. No Illinois firefighter who is under the age of 18 will be permitted to challenge an OSFM written examination. This includes all Illinois firefighters under the age of 18 who have previously received a confirmation to challenge an OSFM written examination.
