Illinois State Fire Marshal Matkaitis


Prior to his appointment as State Fire Marshal in January of 2010 by Governor Quinn, Matkaitis served as regional administrator of OSFM's northern region. He joined the fire marshal's office after a decorated career with the Chicago Fire Department that spanned more than 30 years. He rose through the ranks from paramedic to chief paramedic and, later, assistant deputy fire commissioner for emergency medical operations.

He has been a member of the Illinois Terrorism Task Force since 1999, and was the deputy commander of the unified flood response command team during the summer of 2008 and has previously served as Chairman of the Emergency Medical Services Committee of the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois. He is also a nationally certified Fire Prevention Inspector.

After attending Northern Illinois University, Matkaitis served in the United States Army before joining the Chicago Fire Department in 1975. He is also certified private pilot.
