LOOK UP! Program

The Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office is proud to house the LOOK UP!, Where are your Smoke Alarms Program. The LOOK UP! program was started in 2005 by Kathleen Moritz after she lost her son, Tanner Osbourn, in an off-campus fire in Chicago.

LOOK UP! encourages college students to "look up" and make sure they have a working and properly placed smoke alarm. Every year the OSFM, in collaboration with colleges around the state, hosts a media event and off-campus canvass of student housing during Campus Fire Safety month in September. During the canvass, we offer free smoke alarms to students who do not have them in place.

If you are a fire department with a college campus in your area, or a college representative and would like to take part in a LOOK UP! event or would like free LOOK UP! posters, please call 217-558-0324 or email the Public Education LOOKUP! Porogram.
